Christmas Wrapping Paper Organisation
If your wrap rolls are stashed between your panty, home office, and that roll you used to wrap your kids presents in secret in your walk-in closet is still there then this is for you.
As a Home Organiser who's worked in over 400 homes (410 and counting!), Christmas wrapping paper is one of those categories that can just float from space to space with no real intentional spot in your home. It's not your fault; there's rarely a "home" designed for it. So today I want to walk you through exactly how I store my own wrapping paper, what I recommend to clients, and a couple of timing tricks that will save you in December.
My Favourite Wrapping Paper Storage Hack: IKEA Flisat Spice Racks / IKEA Bevem Spice Racks
This is the exact solution I use in my own home, and one of my most-recommended client solutions: two IKEA Flistat spice racks, stacked or mounted, used purely for wrapping paper.
Here's the trick that makes it work: pop the base out of the top rack. Without that base, the rolls sit upright and slide down into the rack below rather than toppling sideways every time you open the door. It's a fix that solves a problem most "proper" wrapping paper storage products don't.
It's simple, it's affordable, and it keeps every roll upright, visible, and easy to grab. Which, if you're anything like my clients, means you'll actually use what you have instead of buying more because you can't find what you own.
Renovating or Building? Design This In From the Start
If you're in the middle of a reno or a new build, this is your sign to think about wrapping paper storage before the cabinetry goes in — not after.
My recommendation: ask your cabinetmaker for a bottom drawer in your home office or laundry that's a minimum of 720mm wide. Standard wrapping paper rolls are 70cm long, so a drawer of this width means every roll lies flat, fits properly, and doesn't get squashed, bent, or torn at the ends.
It's such a small spec change, but it's the difference between a drawer that works for its whole life and one that becomes "the drawer that never quite fits the wrap."
The Christmas Organising Tip Nobody Tells You: Buy Your Wrap in September
Here's a timing tip I give every single client: buy your Christmas wrapping paper now, in September, while the good designs are still on the shelves.
By the time December rolls around, the beautiful ranges have been picked over for weeks. You're left with three sad rolls of paper you'd never normally choose, in a design that doesn't feel like "you." Shopping early means better range, better prices (before the Christmas rush), and one less thing to think about in the silly season.
Got a Wrapping Paper Stash That's Looking a Bit... Eclectic?
If your current collection is a mash-up of the last three or four years' themes — think reindeer, then a minimalist Scandi print, then last year's bold stripes — you're not alone. This is one of the most common things I see in client homes.
Instead of buying more, commit to this year being the year you use up and run down your existing supply. The trick to making a mismatched collection still look cohesive under the tree? Use the same colour ribbon across every single gift. It's a simple styling choice that visually ties everything together, even when the paper underneath doesn't match at all. Cute, cohesive, and it clears out the cupboard at the same time.
